On 13 July 2025 Mela Nordic gathered academics, writers and artists at Filmcentrum Riks in Stockholm for 78 Years of South Asian Partitioned Voices, an international event marking the Partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947.
The aim was to rethink the familiar Partition narratives and the divisive rhetoric around them, and to look instead at the creativity, solidarity and syncretism that offer other ways of understanding 1947. The programme brought together Indian, Pakistani and Kashmiri perspectives.
Speakers included Professor Ishtiaq Ahmed (Stockholm University), Dr Amrita Ghosh (University of Central Florida), Dr Farooq Sulehria (Beaconhouse National University, Lahore), Dr Aamir Butt, artist Hamama Bushra and writer Usman Malik. The afternoon ended with questions from the audience and music.
